Turquoise Mines of the Southwest

Though there are many turquoise mines in countries around the world, the finest quality turquoise can be found in the mines of the southwestern United States. The majority of high grade turquoise mines can be found in the mines of New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada. Some smaller quantities can also be found in California, Colorado, Utah and Texas. The high altitude and arid climate along with the presents of elemental copper in this area makes an ideal place for turquoise formation. Turquoise is a hydrous phosphate compound of aluminum and copper. It is formed around the copper deposits when oxygen, phosphate radicals and copper ions interact, which is triggered by specific types of weathering.

There are many turquoise mines in the southwestern United States. The Following is a list of more significant mines in the area. They have been organized by state and alphabetized for easy reference.
